Action: Echinacea is used to stimulate the body's immune system and to fight viral and bacterial infections. It inhibits the enzyme hyaluronidase, which when activated destroys the cementing substances between cells and allows pathogens to infiltrate the body. The herb stimulates T-cells and activates macrophages that destroy foreign intracellular invaders. Echinacea increases levels of properdin, a naturally-occurring chemical thought to increase cellular resistance to infection. It also displays anti-tumor and direct antibiotic actions.
